Background

Gramya Vikas Trust was founded by Prof. D.S.Ker in the year 1986-87 with the objective of correcting eco-environment imbalance and thereby paving the way for developing agriculture and animal husbandry, which in turn would improve the lives of the poor farmers. During the initial days, the organisation had to work hard to develop its own understating on gender issues and towards changing the mindset of the community. Today, there are some 1500 women members organized in 117 self help groups.

Situation

In the project area there are only 3 public schools up till grade 5. Only Rupenbadar village has 1 school upto 8th grade and for further studies children have to travel to Dwarka or go to private schools. All 3 Bandar areas have a School Management Committee formed, but all these committees exist only on paper and most of the members are not aware of the rules & responsibilities of School Management Committee (SMC). In the operational area the total number of children in the age group of 3-6 years are 500 (M 234 & F 266) and as per Anganwadi records all children are registered in their respective location. Due to the lack of educational opportunities, limited livelihood options & cultural issues children get married at a very early age.

Objectives

  • 70% children from all Bandars get pre- primary education in the 8 Anganwadi centers.
  • 80% children in the age group 6-14 years get enrolled in school.
  • 75% children retained in school.
  • 100% children in the age group of 6-14 years have access to basic infrastructure in the 4 schools as per Right to Education (RTE) norms.
  • All 4 school’s School Management Committee (SMCs) members are active in monitoring the school governance.
  • Bring a change in the attitude of 25% parents belonging to the fisher community about education and ensure they regularly send their children to school (especially girls).
  • 25% children in the age 14-18 years complete formal school.

Achievements & Impact in the Review Period


  • 100% enrollment was ensured in Anganwadi centers. 1 new Anganwadi has been approved due to demand raised from the community.
  • 151 child labors were identified and efforts were made to motivate them to enroll into school. 51 drop -out children were re-enrolled into schools.
  • Team carried out regular meetings with parents where they emphasized the importance of education for children.
  • Ensured mid day meal supply is regular in all 4 schools.
  • The staff were trained on RTE act and functioning of SMC.
  • Women’s group have been monitored and strengthened.

Plans


The region is mapped as critical on education and the team plans to improve the status of education in the region by involving the community.

Focus 1: Enrollment of all children between 3 to 18 years into school

  • Conduct need assessment survey for new ICDS centres.
  • Identifying and closing the gaps in the functioning of the existing ICDS centres.
  • Child to child tracking to map services being given to children going to the ICDS centres.
  • Conduct group discussions with the community and parents to understand the knowledge, attitude and practices related to children being sent to Anganwadi.
  • Motivate the community and women’s collectives to demand for Anganwadi and Anganwadi staff.
  • Women’s collectives to monitor and strengthen the Anganwadi program.

Focus 2: Ensure retention of children or reduction in drop out

  • Mapping of dropout children (aged between 6-18 years, which also includes children studying in 8th grade and above) and understand reasons for drop-out.
  • Meeting with parents and convincing them to send children to school.
  • Coordination with school teacher, principal to find ways to get children to attend school.
  • Meeting with the community to create a conducive atmosphere for children to attend school.
  • Engaging children in Bal group and create interest in education.
  • Ensuring re-enrollment of dropout children in school.
  • Demand for free transportation for children.
  • Demand for new schools and activation of existing school.
  • Demand to be made for seasonal hostel for children to prevent migration.
