CRY America High School Student Club at the Clear Brook High School in Friendswood, Texas
The first high school chapter of CRY America is off to a great start at the Clear Brook High School in Friendswood, Texas. Since it's inception in mid 2008, the group now has an active membership of over 75 students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, cutting across race, cultures and ethnic backgrounds.
This student group is led by students themselves and has been involved with the following activities which focus on giving back to the community:
- At BEAR’s Warehouse in downtown Houston, students packed and wrapped toys that were to be given to children under the watch of the Child Protective Services. Members who did not directly participate in sorting the presents were given the opportunity to donate goods and other trinkets.
- Students also volunteered their time to pack gallon-sized plastic bags with goodies and hygiene products to be sent to orphans in Haiti through Kanakuk Ministries’ Christmas in Haiti Project. The Clear Brook Student Chapter collectively contributed 23 bags, including two backpacks, to the shipment of over six thousand bags going to Haiti.
- Clear Brook Student Chapter have also participated in hygiene-product drives for the Boys and Girls Harbor, a program local to Houston, Texas, that provides homes for children whose parents are currently incarcerated. The group plans to volunteer at one of the safe houses in the future.
Apart from participating in the above community services, the students group has also advocated community participation in children’s rights and development. Events in which they have “spread the word” include events at their High School such as the Clear Brook High School Club Exposition and the Clear Brook High School Homecoming Carnival. Through both of these events, students, teachers, and parents have had the opportunity to learn about CRY America and the Houston Action Center and have been given the opportunity to participate in the Student Club-sponsored events.
