Project Selection and Review
CRY America extends support to carefully selected grassroots organizations in India. The criteria for selecting organizations includes the following aspects:
1. Assessment of needs. We perform district-wise analysis of child-rights parameters like infant mortality, school enrolment, gender ratios, the incidence of poverty, and the prevalence of social ills like caste discrimination, female infanticide, child labor, child trafficking, exploitation and abuse.
2. Assessment of existing resources. The “map” resulting from our needs analysis is overlaid with information about availability of government and private resources, to identify locations where such help is relatively resource scarce.
3. Assessment of grassroots efforts. Finally, the criteria of innovation and replicability are applied, to identify nascent, grassroots initiatives that offer the best promise of impact.
Project Selection Criteria:
- Focus on underprivileged children
- Focus on social justice rather than mere charity
- Open to holistic child rights orientation
- Focus on nascent initiatives – rural, tribal or urban
- Priority to projects in areas where no other projects / services exist
- Engage actively with local government agencies and programs towards ensuring child rights
- Are open to building networks with other NGO’s
- Vision, commitment, approach of the project partner
- Project concept should engage and empower the community in which they work and ultimately make an irreversible change to the lives of children
- Have clear plans that are impact oriented, with clearly defined impact parameters.
CRY America utilizes the grant management services of CRY India to ensure that the grants are effectively utlized and the capacities of supported projects are enhanced towards achieving their goals
Project Monitoring and Evaluation:
CRY India has developed over the past 30 years highly effective planning, monitoring, and evaluation systems that include:
- Stringent partner selection processes including pre-funding site visits
- Quarterly/half-yearly field visits, financial reports, grant disbursal based on reviews. Our Development Support professionals visits each project on a quarterly or half yearly basis. They meet with the staff, parents, children and the community with whom the project works.
- Assessing the project's training & information support needs as well as it's achievements.
- Submission of quarterly, half yearly and annual reports by the project partner.
- Annual evaluation, budget and plans for the next grant period are initiated by our team.
- Financial Risk Management Module to help identify projects where funds maybe at risk due to poor financial management
- Ongoing review of accounting systems by project partner, regional CRY teams
- Intensive monitoring for high risk projects
- Frequent financial reviews on bookkeeping and maintenance of accounts are carried out at the projects.
- An external project audit is almost always mandatory at each project.
- Project partners are encouraged to discuss their budgets and expenditure with their core teams and the community with whom they work, for greater social accountability and transparency.
- Grant Disbursals to projects are made quarterly or half-yearly based on reviews done
