Our Capacity building role

CRY America’s activities are aimed at achieving the long term outcome of creating A JUST SOCIETY in which all children enjoy the rights of survival, protection, development, and participation as defined by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, 1989.

Some key activities that supported projects/ organizations focus on:

  • Creating community based organizations/ groups to enable the community to take ownership of their own development process, thus empowering them
  • Improving the health of the community with special emphasis on maternal and child health
  • Removing children from labor
  • Preventing child marriages
  • Mainstreaming of children into formal schools
  • Running informal education centers (where there are no schools)
  • Creating children’s groups to provide them with an opportunity for recreation, make them aware of their own rights and enable them to have a voice in the community
  • Partnering with other organizations to form networks and alliances to influence policy at a macro-level
  •  Community awareness on the importance of education, health and other issues

With the aim of enabling sustainable instruments of social change, CRY America then provides supported projects with much needed resources and and builds their capacity to achieve their goals effectively:
•          Stringent partner selection processes including pre-funding site visits
•          Financial support
•          Program development
•          Organizational capacity building
•          Training support
•          Networking support
•          Perspective building on child rights
•          Programmatic and Financial accountability

CRY America utilizes the grant management services of CRY India to ensure that the quality of supported initiatives is enhanced and that the funds are optimally utilized.

CRY has also developed exhaustive and well-recognized impact parameters used in reviewing and planning processes that enables the organization and its grantees to set clearly defined and measurable goals.

  • Community mobilization and engagement: We believe that this is the most effective long-term solution to the multiple causes of poverty, deprivation, exploitation and abuse that constrain the rights of India's children. We enable supported NGO’s to establish:
  • Authentic data on the situation of children - infant and child mortality, nutrition, enrolment, availability of functioning schools of at least adequate quality, child labor and gender and caste differences.
  • Workable models to achieve access to primary and elementary education, healthcare, livelihoods and governance combining direct action, community mobilization and policy influence.

Training Support: CRY partners NGOs which includes training for skill building, information support, and developing promotional materials among others

Networking, Research and Policy Influencing: Our partner CRY India also works with larger networks of NGO’s at the State and national level which help facilitate the transfer of learning, build solidarity between partner organizations and influence policy to positively impact the situation of Indian children. Through supporting networks, CRY provides a platform for partners to meet, share and learn from each other's experiences which also enables the strengthening of field level initiatives. Networks also act as a forum for perspective building on macro issues. CRY India along with hundreds of NGO’s has prime-moved state level networks in Maharashtra, Orissa, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and Tamil Nadu on children's rights and is part of several other issue based networks such as Campaign Against Child Labor, ECPAT, Donor Agency Network and the National Alliance for the Fundamental Right to Education (NAFRE)

Our capacity building and enabling role is an integral part of our “child rights” model of change.
