Born in Shimla, India in 1924, Ram Kumar has been described as one of India's foremost abstract painters. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972 and the Padma Bhushan – a high Indian civilian honor - in 2010. The artist lives and works in Delhi, India.
In 1952, Ram Kumar left for Paris to study painting under Andre Lhote and Fernard Leger and received the JD Rockefeller fund fellowship in 1972.
Ram Kumar’s abstract landscapes, with intense brush strokes usually in oil or acrylic, evoke the universal rhythm of art creation in his paintings. As the interest in Indian art has grown over the years, paintings by Ram Kumar have received high recognition in the art markets internationally and in India.
