Join the CRY America Walk for Child Rights 2011
August 10th, 2011: Volunteers and supporters of CRY America in 20 cities across the country will participate in the CRY Walk for Child Rights from July to October 2011. The initiative is organized annually by the 501c3 non-profit, Child Rights and You America Inc. (CRY America), as a means to raise awareness and resources in support of underprivileged children, especially in India.
Speaking about the event, Shefali Sunderlal, President, CRY America said, "Many children can't go to school because there isn't one to go to. 17,000 habitations in both rural and urban areas in India do not have a primary school within a 1 km (0.6 miles)* radius. Children have to walk long distances to reach schools, and eventually drop out because it gets too tiring. Sometimes the journey to and from school is unsafe, especially for girl children".
"The CRY Walk is a platform for people in the US to get involved and show their support for the thousands of Indian children who are denied their basic rights to live, learn, grow and play. By participating in their local city walks, people can ensure that these children reach their potential through free, accessible and quality education, thereby ensuring a lasting change in their lives," added Ms. Sunderlal.
The CRY Walk for Child Rights, now in its eighth year, is being organized by 20 Volunteer Chapters of CRY America. Some of the cities where the Walk will be held are Boston, New York, Chicago, Bay Area, San Diego, Pittsburgh and Detroit.
"From CRY America's work in the 1916 villages and slums over the last 8 years, we see child labor as intrinsically linked to the lack of free, quality government schools near home. No buildings, no teachers, irregular teaching, no separate toilets for girls are some key realities that push children out of school and into work. With the support of 15,000 donors and 500 volunteers, CRY America so far has ensured that all children in 1916 slums and villages go to schools but we need continuous support to include many more children. If each one of us believes in doing what is right, then together, we can ensure all children their right to a fulfilling childhood," concluded Ms. Sunderlal.
